It’s a hot summer day and your air conditioner is covered in thick frosting.

Unfortunately, this is a common occurrence. A number of elements can create frost on your air conditioner. Here are some explanations to help you better understand this phenomenon:

• It is possible that there is interference in the airflow. This interference can result from clogged air filters, debris buildup in the evaporator coil, a deteriorated fan motor, and small, blocked or collapsed vents.
• It is also possible that the outdoor temperature is causing an icing problem. An outdoor temperature below 60 degrees Fahrenheit (or 15 degrees Celsius) can cause the outdoor unit to not work optimally. Also, if the temperature drops too drastically overnight, the air conditioner could end up frosting over.
• Problems with air conditioning refrigeration can also cause your outdoor unit to freeze. If the refrigerant (Freon) level is too low, or if there is a leak, it can cause a pressure drop in the air conditioner’s evaporator. Moisture in the air can freeze and clump in the coil. If this happens, contact a professional immediately.

What can you do to solve this icing problem?

Unfortunately, a layer of frost on your air conditioner is a clear sign that your unit has a problem. A frozen air conditioner means a decrease in cooling capacity. Don’t waste time and act quickly, as a frost breakout uses more energy and can seriously damage your air conditioner or heat pump.

If your air conditioner is frozen, here are some guidelines to follow:

• When you notice that your air conditioner is frozen, turn it off and let it thaw completely.
• When thawed, examine the airflow and then clean or replace your filters. This may take care of some of your icing problems.
• If freezing problems continue even after your filters have been cleaned and replaced, call a professional right away. Freon leaks, larger air leaks or other problems require expert attention. It is not advisable to do a repair yourself: a certified technician will know exactly what to do.
