What is an air exchanger?
Since new construction is very tight and well insulated, the air in your home is loaded with moisture and pollutants created by numerous human activities. An air exchanger removes stale and polluted air from inside your home to the outside, replacing it with fresh air that is low in pollutants and moisture.
The installation of an air exchanger is not just a simple device, but a duct system that must be installed in the walls. If you already have a central heating, ventilation or air conditioning system, the installation of your air exchanger will be less complicated and therefore less expensive.
An air exchanger is also used to:
- Maintain a pleasant humidity level (between 30% and 40% in winter and 50% in summer)
- Capture pollutants and allergens (dust, pollen, mold, etc.)
- Maintain a constant flow of fresh air
- Remove unpleasant odors (tobacco, cooking, cleaning products)
What types of air exchangers are available on the market?
- Basic air exchanger: This basic system is the least expensive. It filters the incoming air and rejects excessive humidity. Its main advantages are that it avoids condensation problems (fogging of windows, window sills covered with mold) and improves air quality by removing most particles and pollutants that can cause respiratory problems. It does not contain a core.
- Heat Recovery Ventilator: Also known as a heat recovery ventilator, this unit remains by far the most popular type of air exchanger. It has the same basic features as the non-heat recovery air exchanger, but also has the advantage of recovering much of the heat from the exhaust air and transferring it to the incoming fresh air.
- Energy recovery air exchanger: Also known as an energy recovery ventilator, this more sophisticated device not only recovers heat, but also recovers part of the humidity if necessary, in order to maintain a constant humidity level throughout the year. Since this air exchanger allows the conservation of humidity and heat during the winter season and the rejection of humidity and heat in the summer, it is like a “mini heat pump”.
What are the advantages of an air exchanger?
- Significant improvement in air quality
- Evacuation of humidity
- Superior ventilation
- Elimination of pollutants (tobacco smoke, cleaning product vapors…)
- Reduced risk of mold and mildew
- Better energy efficiency of heating and air conditioning equipment (electric, heat pump, etc.)
