How does an air exchanger work?
An air exchanger, also known as a heat recovery unit or heat recovery ventilator, is a device designed to improve indoor air quality by renewing the air while maintaining indoor temperature. Here’s how an air exchanger generally works:
- Heat exchange: The air exchanger has two distinct air streams: stale indoor air and fresh outdoor air. These two air streams flow through the exchanger without ever mixing directly. During this process, heat is transferred from the warm outgoing (indoor) air to the incoming (outdoor) air through a heat exchanger.
- Air filtration: Before outside air is introduced into the indoor space, it generally passes through filters to remove contaminants such as air pollutants, allergens, dust and pollen.
- Air renewal: Filtered outdoor air is introduced into the indoor space, providing a constant supply of fresh air. At the same time, stale indoor air is evacuated from the space, providing complete air renewal.
- Energy savings: One of the main features of air exchangers is their ability to recover heat from the outgoing air. This minimizes heat loss during cold months and reduces heating costs. Similarly, during warmer months, the air exchanger can transfer heat from the incoming air to the outgoing air, helping to maintain a cooler indoor temperature and reduce the load on air-conditioning systems.
What are the benefits of an air exchanger?
- Improved air quality: Air exchangers renew indoor air by bringing in fresh air from outside while removing stale indoor air. This helps eliminate contaminants, allergens, unwanted odors and excessive humidity, creating a healthier, more pleasant indoor environment.
- Energy conservation: Air exchangers recover heat from outgoing air and transfer it to incoming air during cold seasons, reducing heat loss and lowering the heating load. Similarly, during warmer seasons, the air exchanger can transfer coolness from the incoming air to the outgoing air, reducing the need to overuse air-conditioning systems.
- Thermal comfort: By recovering heat from outgoing air during cold months, air exchangers help maintain a constant, comfortable indoor temperature, without the sudden temperature fluctuations often associated with traditional ventilation.
- Reduced energy costs: By minimizing heat loss during cold months and reducing overloading of air-conditioning systems during hot months, air exchangers can help reduce the overall energy costs of a home or commercial building.
- Elimination of mold and condensation: By controlling indoor humidity, air exchangers help prevent the formation of mold and condensation, which can be beneficial to the health of occupants and the preservation of building structures.
- Odor reduction: By eliminating unwanted odors and bringing in fresh outside air, air exchangers can help maintain a more pleasant, welcoming indoor environment.
