After spending several summers by the fan to escape the heatwave, you’ve finally decided to equip your home with air conditioning.

But be careful! Such a purchase needs to be planned and prepared, so as to benefit both you and your home. Here’s some expert advice to help you plan your purchase.

Know the surface area to be air-conditioned: A heat pump’s capacity is measured in BTU/h (British Thermal Unit per hour), i.e. its ability to cool a given space. If you know the surface area to be air-conditioned, it’s easier for you to choose the right air conditioner model for your home.

Don’t be tempted by window or portable air conditioners: Although they can be a temporary solution, window or portable air conditioners are not a good option for cooling your home. They’re noisy, bulky and consume a lot of energy.

Explore the types of heat pumps on the market: Although there are dozens of brands on the market, there are only a few types: the wall-mounted heat pump (ideal for bungalows and apartments), the central heat pump (perfect for homes with central ventilation and/or heating) and the multi-zone heat pump (recommended for multi-storey homes).

Start shopping for your air conditioner as soon as winter ends: If you want to benefit from the advantages of an air conditioner as soon as summer begins, start your search as soon as winter ends. This will make it easier for you to get an appointment with a Tran Climatisation technician. You’ll be able to install in the spring, and won’t be caught short by summer high-demand time.

Watch out for subsidies: In Quebec, the average price of a wall-mounted heat pump (including installation and appliance) is between $2,000 and $6,000. However, you can benefit from a number of subsidies, such as the Thermopompes Efficaces subsidy offered by Hydro-Québec. Don’t hesitate to ask your Tran Climatisation consultant for more information.

Don’t be afraid to ask for several quotes: With such a large purchase, ask for several quotes. That way, you’ll find the company that offers you the best price, the best service, and a warranty on parts and labor. That way, you’ll be able to make an informed choice.

Any questions?

With summer in full swing, you want your air conditioning to be efficient, without driving up your energy bill. Here’s a list of practical tips to ensure that your air conditioner provides comfort and well-being during the hottest summer weather.

1 – Maintenance and cleaning: Before you start using your air conditioner for an extended period, be sure to contact Tran Climatisation to have it cleaned and serviced. Dirt accumulated in your air conditioning system can compromise its efficiency.

2 – Fan blade orientation: Since hot air rises and cold air sinks, orienting the fan blades of your evaporator (the indoor unit of your heat pump) horizontally will help maintain better circulation of cool air.

3 – Efficient dehumidification: When it’s hot and humid outside (over 20 degrees), air conditioning will be more effective than dehumidification in lowering the humidity level in your home.

4 – Doors and windows: If your air conditioner is running, leave the doors and windows closed. Otherwise, it will have to work twice as hard to cool and dehumidify your home.

With the possible end of the Greener Homes Subsidy offered by the Government of Canada, what other subsidies are available? Here are some solutions for you! Call us for more information!

As of March 2024, Canada’s Greener Homes Subsidy program will no longer be taking new applications, as announced by the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI). HRAI has confirmed that demand for subsidies from individuals has exceeded initial forecasts, and that the average amount of these applications has exceeded expectations.

So, if you’re considering replacing your oil heating system with a heat pump, or installing a heat pump for your heating system, it’s crucial to act quickly.

It’s now or never to do business with Tran Climatisation for the purchase of a new heat pump or the replacement of your oil system with a more efficient heat pump!

Is the air exchanger really effective in improving air quality in a home? We’ve taken a closer look! Call us for more information!

When you think of an air exchanger, you think of a device that has the ability to improve air quality in your home, apartment or condo, while being low-noise and economical. But is an air exchanger really effective in purifying your air and making it cleaner?

The answer is yes! An air exchanger can be very effective in purifying the air in a home. Air exchangers, also known as Heat Recovery Ventilation (HRV) systems or Cross Ventilation Heat Recovery (CVHR) systems, are designed to renew indoor air by evacuating stale air while introducing fresh air from outside.

Here are just a few of the ways an air exchanger can help purify the air in a home:

Removal of indoor pollutants: Air exchangers can remove pollutants such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), allergens, fine particles and other contaminants from indoor air.

Fresh air introduction: By bringing in fresh air from outside, air exchangers help dilute pollutants present inside the home, thus improving air quality.

Humidity control: Some air exchangers are equipped with devices to control humidity, which can help prevent the growth of mold and mildew, improving indoor air quality.

Air filtration: Some air exchanger models feature filters that capture fine particles and allergens, improving air quality by reducing the presence of these contaminants.

What can improve the efficiency of an air exchanger?

Choosing the right model: It’s essential to choose an air exchanger tailored to the specific needs of your home. This includes the size of the house, the number of occupants, the level of indoor air pollution, etc.

Correct installation: An air exchanger must be installed correctly to function optimally. This means positioning air inlets and outlets strategically to ensure efficient ventilation and minimize heat or cool loss.

Regular maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential to maintain the efficiency of an air exchanger. This includes replacing filters in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations, cleaning air ducts, inlet and outlet grilles, and periodically checking overall system operation.

Use of quality filters: The filters used in an air exchanger play a crucial role in filtering air contaminants. Choosing top-quality filters can improve air exchanger efficiency by capturing fine particles, allergens and other pollutants more effectively.

Humidity control: Some air exchangers are equipped with humidity control devices, such as enthalpy heat exchangers, which help maintain optimum humidity levels in the home. Proper humidity control can help prevent the growth of mold and mildew, while improving comfort and indoor air quality.

What are the most effective filters to add to my air exchanger?

The choice of filters for your air exchanger will depend in part on the contaminants you wish to filter and the specific needs of your home. Here are some filter options commonly used in air exchangers, ranked by increasing efficiency:

Mesh or pre-filters: These filters are usually made of materials such as nylon or polyester, and are designed to capture larger particles such as hair, dust and lint. They protect the finer filters by trapping coarser particles.

HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filters: HEPA filters are highly effective at removing fine particles such as allergens, bacteria and mold spores. They can trap up to 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns.

Activated carbon filters: Activated carbon filters are effective at removing odors, gases and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the air. Activated carbon adsorbs unwanted chemicals, helping to improve air quality.

Electrostatic filters: These filters use an electrostatic charge to attract and trap fine particles in the air. They can be effective in removing allergens, dust and other contaminants, but their effectiveness can vary according to factors such as air humidity.

Antimicrobial filters : Some filters are treated with antimicrobial agents to inhibit the growth of bacteria, mold and fungi. They can help maintain a healthier indoor environment by reducing the spread of pathogens.

Don’t hesitate to ask a Tran Climatisation consultant for advice on the best filter for your air exchanger. And be sure to replace filters regularly in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions to maintain the efficiency of your air exchanger and ensure optimum indoor air quality.

In conclusion, we’ve proven that an air exchanger makes a highly significant contribution to keeping the air in your home clean and fresh, while being practical and economical.

What are the benefits of having an air exchanger at home or at work? Tran Climatisation has answered the question! Call us for more information or a quote?

How does an air exchanger work?

An air exchanger, also known as a heat recovery unit or heat recovery ventilator, is a device designed to improve indoor air quality by renewing the air while maintaining indoor temperature. Here’s how an air exchanger generally works:

Heat exchange: The air exchanger has two distinct air streams: stale indoor air and fresh outdoor air. These two air streams flow through the exchanger without ever mixing directly. During this process, heat is transferred from the warm outgoing (indoor) air to the incoming (outdoor) air through a heat exchanger.

Air filtration: Before outside air is introduced into the indoor space, it generally passes through filters to remove contaminants such as air pollutants, allergens, dust and pollen.

Air renewal: Filtered outdoor air is introduced into the indoor space, providing a constant supply of fresh air. At the same time, stale indoor air is evacuated from the space, providing complete air renewal.

Energy savings: One of the main features of air exchangers is their ability to recover heat from the outgoing air. This minimizes heat loss during cold months and reduces heating costs. Similarly, during warmer months, the air exchanger can transfer heat from the incoming air to the outgoing air, helping to maintain a cooler indoor temperature and reduce the load on air-conditioning systems.

What are the benefits of an air exchanger?

Improved air quality: Air exchangers renew indoor air by bringing in fresh air from outside while removing stale indoor air. This helps eliminate contaminants, allergens, unwanted odors and excessive humidity, creating a healthier, more pleasant indoor environment.

Energy conservation: Air exchangers recover heat from outgoing air and transfer it to incoming air during cold seasons, reducing heat loss and lowering the heating load. Similarly, during warmer seasons, the air exchanger can transfer coolness from the incoming air to the outgoing air, reducing the need to overuse air-conditioning systems.

Thermal comfort: By recovering heat from outgoing air during cold months, air exchangers help maintain a constant, comfortable indoor temperature, without the sudden temperature fluctuations often associated with traditional ventilation.

Reduced energy costs: By minimizing heat loss during cold months and reducing overloading of air-conditioning systems during hot months, air exchangers can help reduce the overall energy costs of a home or commercial building.

Elimination of mold and condensation: By controlling indoor humidity, air exchangers help prevent the formation of mold and condensation, which can be beneficial to the health of occupants and the preservation of building structures.

Odor reduction: By eliminating unwanted odors and bringing in fresh outside air, air exchangers can help maintain a more pleasant, welcoming indoor environment.

Want to switch from oil to electricity? Tran Climatisation presents the subsidies and financial assistance programs available for converting oil heating systems to electric heating systems. Don’t hesitate to contact us for more information!

Oil-to-electric conversion: what subsidies are available?

With the new laws concerning oil-fired heating appliances in force since 2021, seize the opportunity to convert your current oil-fired heating system to a more efficient electric heating system. However, considering the work involved, the initial cost of converting to an electric system can be daunting, and may even put a damper on your project.

However, we do have subsidy solutions available from the Quebec and Canadian governments to help offset some of the conversion costs.

Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program

In November 2022, the federal government launched a subsidy to support middle- and low-income households wishing to replace their oil heating system. This initiative is also linked to the Canadian Green Home Program.

As an accredited contractor, Tran Climatisation offers you the possibility of obtaining the subsidy for Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program, which can amount to up to $5,000.

Oil-to-electric conversion: which electric system should you choose for your home?

With new laws in effect on oil-fired heating systems, you may be tempted to change your oil-fired furnace for a more efficient electric one. But which one is right for you? Our team takes a closer look.

Wall-mounted heat pump

A wall-mounted heat pump is an efficient, compact heating and cooling unit mounted on an interior wall. It uses electrical energy to extract heat from outside air in winter and discharge it outside in summer, providing year-round comfort.

What are the benefits of a wall-mounted heat pump?

Lower heating and cooling costs: The heat pump draws energy from the outside air, making it more efficient than traditional heating and cooling systems. You can save up to 35% on your energy bills.

Better energy efficiency: A heat pump’s coefficient of performance (COP) is generally greater than 1, which means it produces more energy than it consumes.

Heating and cooling in one: A heat pump can keep you comfortable all year round, heating in winter and cooling in summer.

More uniform temperature: The heat pump distributes heat and cooling more evenly throughout your home than traditional systems.

Reduced greenhouse gas emissions: Heat pumps use less energy than oil-fired heating systems, reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Use of renewable energy: The heat pump draws energy from the outdoor air, a renewable energy source.

Subsidies available: Government subsidies may be available for the purchase and installation of a heat pump.

What are the disadvantages of a wall-mounted heat pump?

Initial cost: The purchase and installation of a wall-mounted heat pump can represent a significant initial investment, even if prices are on the decline.

Heating capacity sometimes limited: During colder weather, some wall-mounted heat pump models have limited heating capacity. During periods of extreme cold, an auxiliary heating source may be required.

Average price (installation and unit included): Between $2500 and $6000

**Multi-zone wall-mounted heat pumps are also available. In this case, the heat pump features a single outdoor compressor, which can be connected to more than one evaporator. It offers the same benefits as a wall-mounted heat pump. As a general rule, an outdoor compressor can support between 2 and 6 evaporators.**

Here are a few examples:

An 18,000 BTU/h compressor can support 2 evaporators of 9,000 BTU/h each.

A 36,000 BTU/h compressor can support 4 evaporators of 9,000 BTU/h each.

A 60,000 BTU/h compressor can support 6 evaporators of 10,000 BTU/h each.

***If your home has several floors, or if you’re buying a heat pump for a duplex or triplex, this may be an interesting option for you. Ask your Tran Climatisation advisor to show you the wall-mounted heat pump models best suited to your needs.***

Central heat pump

A central heat pump is a device that draws energy from the outside air to heat or cool your home. It’s more efficient than a conventional furnace or air conditioner. It replaces both the furnace and the air conditioner, and saves energy.

What are the benefits of a central heat pump?

Lower heating and cooling costs: The heat pump draws energy from the outside air, making it more efficient than traditional heating and cooling systems. You can save 35% to 40% on your electricity bill.

Improved air quality: Some heat pump models can filter the air and remove pollutants, which can improve indoor air quality.

Reduced greenhouse gas emissions: Heat pumps use less energy than oil-fired heating systems, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

Use of renewable energy: The heat pump draws energy from the outside air, a renewable energy source, unlike oil-fired heating systems.

Subsidies available: Several subsidies and financial assistance programs are available for the purchase and installation of a central heat pump.

What are the disadvantages of a central heat pump?

Higher installation costs: If you don’t have a central ventilation system, the cost of installing a central heat pump may be higher.

Noise: The outdoor compressor can be noisy, especially in cooling mode.

Performance in cold climates: If you’re faced with very cold temperatures, this can affect the performance of the central heat pump. Some models are specially designed for colder climates; ask your Tran Climatisation consultant for advice.

Average cost (including installation and equipment): between $5,500 and $11,000

Electric Furnace

An electric furnace is a heating appliance that uses electricity to heat the ambient air. The electricity is transformed into heat by electric resistors, and the warm air is then distributed throughout the house by a fan. It’s an alternative to oil-fired heating systems, and is renowned for its quiet, clean operation.

What are the benefits of an electric furnace?

Efficient energy conversion (approx. 100%)

No energy loss through ducts

Clean heating, with no combustion or harmful gas emissions

Quiet, odorless operation

Uniform temperature throughout the home

Easy, low-cost installation

Minimal maintenance required

Long service life (20 years)

Reduced greenhouse gas emissions

What are the disadvantages of an electric furnace?

Higher initial cost

Take up more space

Requires regular maintenance

Average cost (including installation and appliance): between $2,000 and $6,000

Fan coil unit

A fan coil is a device that distributes hot or cold air to heat or cool a room. It consists of a heat exchanger, a fan and an air filter.

What are the benefits of a fan coil unit?

Less energy consumption to heat or cool a room.

Diffuses gentle, even heat.

Fast, efficient heating or cooling.

Fewer drafts and hot or cold spots.

Can be used for both heating and cooling.

Reversible, for heating in winter and cooling in summer.

Quick, easy installation.

Little space required.

What are the disadvantages of a fan coil unit?

Purchase and installation costs can be higher than traditional electric convectors.

Requires a hot or cold water production system, such as a boiler or heat pump.

Fan may generate noise, especially at high speed.

Noise can be a nuisance in bedrooms or offices.

The air filter must be cleaned regularly to avoid a drop in efficiency and noise.

These heating systems are not your only option. You can also combine them to save money and benefit from subsidies. Here’s an interesting example.

Electric furnace and central heat pump

If you already have ventilation ducts, our specialists recommend an electric furnace/central heat pump combination. This option allows you to maximize the energy efficiency of your heating system, reduce your electricity bill and benefit from generous government subsidies.

More efficient than the furnace alone, the heat pump operates up to a certain temperature, then the furnace takes over when temperatures get too cold. However, with technological advances in heating systems, some central heat pump models can now operate down to -30°C, resulting in significant energy savings.

The initial cost of a system combining a wall-mounted heat pump and an electric furnace can range from $9,000 to $15,000. However, with such an installation, you could be eligible for government subsidies of up to $6,000.

If you’re changing your oil heating system for a heat pump, you may want to check your eligibility for the Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Subsidy, which can be worth up to $6,000.

For the purchase of your heat pump, there’s also Hydro-Québec’s Efficient Heat Pumps subsidy, which gives you $50 per thousand BTU/h of heating at -8°C (For example, a 10,000 BTU/h heat pump will give you $500).

Also, if you combine the installation of a heat pump with other energy improvement work, such as caulking, you could also benefit from the LogisVert subsidy, also offered by Hydro-Québec. The amount available depends on the heating capacity of your heat pump.

Finally, there’s the Chauffez Vert subsidy, which can give you up to $1275, if all the necessary conditions are met.

Benefit from our service to replace your oil-fired boiler with an electric heating system (electric furnace, heat pump). Call us for a quote!

Replace your oil boiler with an electric heating system with Tran Climatisation!

As of December 31, 2021, the installation of oil-fired boilers in new construction is strictly prohibited. Also, from December 31, 2023, it will also be forbidden to replace your existing oil-fired boiler with a newer model.

With the rising price of oil and the new measures in effect, perhaps it’s time to replace your oil-fired boiler with a more efficient, energy-saving electric heating system. Tran Climatisation can replace your oil-fired boiler, whatever the make or model, with a more efficient electric heating system.

What are the benefits of replacing your oil-fired boiler with an electric heater?

Although oil-fired boilers have long been considered an efficient heating appliance, they release large quantities of greenhouse gases that seriously harm the environment. What’s more, they pose a danger of carbon monoxide poisoning, explosion and oil leaks.

Here are the benefits of converting your oil-fired boiler to an electric heating system:

Ecological: Choosing electricity for your heating is an eco-responsible gesture. The production, transportation and use of heating oil are major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. Electricity, a clean energy source, is at your fingertips.

Safe: Unlike heating oil, electricity eliminates the risk of gas leaks, oil tank leaks or carbon monoxide emissions. What’s more, the absence of fuel and chimneys considerably reduces the risk of fire and poisoning.

Easy to use: With all homes connected to electricity, this mode of heating is extremely convenient. You won’t need to keep an eye on your tank; an electric system is always ready to go, whatever the season.

Economical: Electric heating is proven to be more economical than oil. Without the costs associated with filling the tank and costly maintenance, electricity is an ideal choice. What’s more, electric systems generally last longer than their oil-fired counterparts.

Compliance: Government and local regulations are evolving regarding the use of fuel oil. As of December 31, 2023, it will be forbidden to install or replace an oil-fired heating system with one that runs on fossil fuels in existing buildings. Finally, it will be impossible for Tran Climatisation to repair furnaces over 20 years old and water heaters over 10 years old after this date.

Since the conversion service can be costly, you can subscribe to the Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program. Our advisors will be happy to help you with your grant application.

In recent years, the Quebec government has set itself the goal of limiting the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) and other atmospheric pollutants. Unfortunately, one of the heating systems used in Quebec, the oil heating system, is a major emitter of CO2.

In order to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, since December 31, 2021, it is formally prohibited to install a heating system in new homes. In addition, as of December 31, 2023, it will be impossible to replace your oil heating system with a similar type of appliance. Finally, the city of Montreal will completely ban all oil-fired heating systems in 2030.

With this in mind, and with the price of oil continuing to rise, if your oil heating system is showing signs of fatigue, it may be time to consider replacing it. Here are the two most effective and economical options.

Electricity

Since the apparition of hydroelectricity in Quebec in 1944, electricity remains the most used energy source by Quebecers.

Your first option is to install an electric furnace. Also known as a fan coil unit, the electric furnace is easy and safe to use. It is a rather quiet device that requires little maintenance. If you have a central oil heating system, you will need to remove the oil furnace and tank, clean the vents and install your new electric furnace.

As a second option, you can have electric baseboard heaters installed in every room of the house. This will allow you to adjust the temperature in each room according to your needs. Installing programmable thermostats allows you to regulate the temperature according to your activities. This way, you can save on your energy bills. However, before installing baseboard heaters, it is imperative to check the capacity of your home’s electrical input. If you need to increase it, call a professional electrician.

Natural Gas

If you live in an area served by a natural gas distribution network, a natural gas heating system may be an option to consider. Although it is a non-renewable fossil fuel, natural gas emits 30% less CO2 than fuel oil.

If you have a central heating system, you should also completely remove the oil furnace and tank. You’ll also need to clean the vents thoroughly. Then you can have your natural gas furnace professionally installed. The main advantage of a natural gas heating system is that it heats more quickly and evenly than electricity.

How much does it cost?

Electricity

Cost of an electric furnace in 2022: between $2400 and $3600*

Annual maintenance costs: minimal

Cost of baseboard heaters and thermostats: varies depending on the model, size, and features selected

Natural Gas

Cost of a natural gas furnace in 2022: between $4800 and $7920* (this price includes connection to the network and labor)

Annual maintenance fee: $245* (this includes a technician visit and filter replacement)

Are there any subsidies for heating systems in Quebec?

To promote a better energy transition, the Quebec government has created the “Chauffez Vert” program, which is mainly intended for homeowners located in Quebec.

Amount granted for a single-family home: $1275

Including the complete dismantling of the oil-fired boiler (furnace) and the removal of the tank

Installation of a renewable energy system such as electricity

How do I choose a company to install my new heating system?

Unless it is an emergency, avoid changing your heating system during the winter. Not only will companies be busier, but prices may be higher. By requesting a quote in the spring or summer, heating technicians are less busy. You’ll have much less trouble getting a consultation and your installation will be done before winter.

Our advice:

Deal with a company that specializes in heating and offers a complete range of services (sales, installation, maintenance, repair)

Don’t hesitate to ask questions about the parts and labor warranties for each unit offered.

To find a company that offers you excellent value, ask for at least three quotes.

With the sometimes extreme temperatures that prevail during the winter in Quebec, you want to have an efficient heating system that will not make your energy bill explode. The Tran Climatisation team has chosen for you the most economical heating system for your home in Quebec.

Electrical heating system

The most economical heating system in Quebec is without a doubt electric heating. Present in abundance in Quebec, electricity is a clean, renewable, available and inexpensive energy compared to other energy sources. The air is heated by the energy source (electricity) and is distributed in the house by a central or wall heating system.

The electric heating system comes in different forms:

Wall-mounted heat pump

Central heat pump

Electric furnace

Electric boiler

Fan coil unit

Forced-air heating system (central system with ventilation ducts connected to an electric furnace)

What are the benefits of electric heating?

Clean, renewable and inexpensive energy source

Lower purchase price than other heating systems

No chimney or storage tank

No emission of harmful substances (greenhouse gases, soot, gas, etc.)

Fast and uniform heating

Natural gas heating system

Secondly, you have natural gas heating, which is slightly more expensive than electric heating. It is often presented as a central heating system, such as a forced air system, or from a furnace. The gas heats air in a tank and then distributes the air through a central duct system. Natural gas is a resource that allows for uniform ambient heat. However, natural gas heating systems sometimes require more expensive installations than electricity.

What are the benefits of a natural gas heating system?

Fast and uniform heating of your home

Safe and efficient heating system

Does not produce soot, dust, smoke or ash

Continues to operate even during a power outage

Heating efficiency of over 90%.

Any questions?

Regardless of the size and style of your home, it is imperative to have an efficient heating system to face the harsh winters that hit Quebec several months a year.

But what is the best heating system to have in your home? With its many years of experience, the Tran Climatisation team has studied the question for you to help you make the best choice for your heating system.

Central and wall-mounted heat pump

Did you know that the technology used in the heat pump was invented in 1856? Since then, the technology of the wall and central heat pump has evolved tremendously. The heat pump has become a versatile system that allows you to heat your home efficiently.

How does a heat pump work?

The principle of operation of the heat pump is based on the transfer of heat from one place to another. The heat pump absorbs heat from outside and transfers it inside your home. Generally, it captures the outside heat up to a temperature of -15°C and now up to -30°C. From this temperature, you will have to rely on a supplementary heating system such as electric baseboard heaters. This other system will take over when it gets colder.

The central heat pump includes an outdoor unit but requires a ventilation system in the house to distribute the heat more evenly throughout the house. The purchase cost is higher than a wall-mounted heat pump, but will be more cost-effective in the end.

What are the benefits of an heat pump?

Easy installation

Year-round comfort

Better energy efficiency

Can heat, cool and dehumidify your home

Low-noise indoor and outdoor units

Lasts between 10 and 15 years (with regular maintenance)

Forced-air central heating system

Forced-air heating systems can use natural gas, electricity or propane. It is usually powered by a furnace or boiler.

How does a forced-air central heating system work?

In most cases, a forced-air central heating system is powered by a furnace. It distributes heat through a network of ducts to provide a comfortable temperature quickly, and in all rooms of the house.

What are the benefits of a forced-air central heating system?

Lifetime of 15 to 20 years (with regular maintenance)

Excellent energy efficiency

Uses a clean energy source (electricity, propane, natural gas)

Excellent durability

Requires little maintenance

Faster and more even heating

If you are looking to purchase an air conditioner or heat pump for your home, the first thing you need to consider is the BTU capacity of your air conditioning system.

First of all, the BTU, or British Thermal Unit, is a unit of cooling energy used to measure the capacity of air conditioners and heat pumps. If you know the area to be cooled (see chart below), you will be able to better determine the BTU rating of your air conditioner.

In addition to the area to be cooled, your Tran Climatisation technician also takes into consideration the height of the ceilings, the orientation of the windows, the age of the windows and the quality of the insulation in your home.

We invite you to consult the table below to find out approximately how much power your air conditioner or heat pump should have:

Area to cool (square feet)

Required cooling capacity (in BTU)

100 to 150

5000

150 to 250

6000

250 to 300

7000

300 to 350

8000

350 to 400

9000

400 to 450

10 000

450 to 500

11 000

500 to 550

12 000

550 to 700

14 000

700 to 1000

18 000

1000 to 1200

21 000

1200 to 1400

23 000

1400 to 1500

24 000

1500 to 2000

30 000

2000 to 2500

34 000

We would like to remind you that this table is only an estimate; it is important to take into account the factors that may influence the number of tons you will need.

The more BTUs you need, the more expensive your unit will be. There are several types of air conditioners and heat pumps on the market. The most well known are the wall-mounted air conditioning systems (wall-mounted heat pump, split-system heat pump) and the central air conditioning system (central heat pump.)

However, even if you know how much space you need to air condition, make sure that a qualified technician inspects your home so that he can accurately assess the size of the air conditioner you will need. An air conditioner that is too powerful, or too weak, can lead to several problems, including higher energy bills.

Any questions?

Split-unit air conditioning consists of two main units, which have various functions. This system is called “split” because the two units are independent; one is an outdoor unit and the other is an indoor unit. The indoor unit is the fan that moves the air around the house or building while the outdoor unit is the compressor that cools the air and handles the condensation.

There are two types of split air conditioner systems:

Single-zone split air conditioning: A split air conditioner can be installed so that only one indoor unit is connected to an outdoor compressor. The compressor brings refrigerant and power to the indoor unit through a small pipe, passing through a small opening, easily installed on your house.

Multi-zone split air conditioning: If you have multiple floors in your home, this may be a good choice for you. A multi-zone split air conditioning system consists of an outdoor compressor that can power up to five indoor units, each controlled separately by a wireless remote. You can even choose to add units to your compressor in the future after installing only two indoor units (depending on the maximum number of connectable units).

What are the benefits of a split air conditioner?

More affordable than a central air conditioner

Easy to install

Quieter indoor and outdoor units

Year-round comfort

Better energy efficiency

Better humidity control

Savings on your energy bill

10 to 15 year life span (with regular maintenance and cleaning)
